This is the index of the book — the alphabetical listing of every topic covered in the entire Instrumentation volume. So what I want you to take away from this is not any single fact, but rather the map of the whole territory we're going to cover together. Let me walk you through what this index tells us about the structure of the course. First, you'll notice the units of measurement right at the top — Metres, Miles Per Hour, Nautical Miles, Millibar, Minutes. These are the fundamental units you'll be working with throughout your entire flying career. A nautical mile is the standard for distance in aviation, a millibar is the unit for pressure — you'll see that again when we get to Mean Sea Level, which is abbreviated MSL, the reference datum for altitude measurement. And you'll notice there's a whole section on the Measurement of Altitude and the Measurement of Speed, both starting at page 25. Now look at the instruments themselves. You have the Mode Control Panel — that's the MCP — and the Mode Controllers, both at page 341. These are the heart of the autopilot system. The MCP is where you select the autopilot modes, and the Mode Annunciator, at page 341 and 365, is what tells you which mode is actually engaged. You'll also see the MCP Mode Selector Switches and MCP Parameter Selection at page 368 — that's where you physically choose the mode and set the target values. Then there's the Mode Selector Panel at 239 and the Mode Selector Unit — the MSU — at 240. These are different from the MCP — they're for selecting the source of your flight data, like which air data computer or which inertial reference system is feeding your instruments. You'll also see the Multi Control and Display Unit — the MCDU — at page 318. That's the keyboard and screen unit you use to input flight plan data into the flight management system. Now, some of these entries are about specific functions. N1 Mode at 394 and N1 Equalization at 395 — N1 is the fan speed of a turbine engine, and the N1 mode is an autothrottle mode that controls thrust based on that fan speed. Equalization is the function that balances the thrust between the two engines. You'll also see MMO at page 83 — that's the Maximum Operating Mach number, the fastest Mach speed you're allowed to fly. And MMR at page 86 — that's the Multi-Mode Receiver, which is a navigation radio receiver. There are also some more specialised items. Methods of Magnetization at 107 and Methods of Demagnetization at 108 — that's about how compass magnets are made and how you remove unwanted magnetism from components. Mercury levelling switches at 177 — those are older-style switches used in some attitude instruments. Moment of Inertia at 140 — that's a physics property that matters for gyroscope behaviour. Manufacturing Imperfections at pages 142 and 157 — those are the small errors built into instruments during production that we have to account for. You'll also see Minimum Speed Reversion at 414 — that's a protection feature in the flight control system. And Maximum Pitch and Bank Angles at 374 — the limits the autopilot will command. Now, some of these entries are about display modes. Map Mode at 293, and MAP at 286, 288, and 293 — that's the navigation display showing your position on a map. MODE SELECTOR at 286 is the switch that changes what the display shows. And Mask at 265 — that's a display technique where part of the screen is blanked out. You'll also see MSG at 278 — that's the message function on a display. Monitor at 308 and Memory at 309 — those are about how the flight management computer watches its own operation and stores data. And Measured Ram Rise at page 30 — that's the temperature increase caused by the air compressing as it hits the aircraft at speed, which affects your airspeed indication. So what I want you to understand from this index is the scope of what we're covering: the measurement of altitude and speed, the gyroscopic instruments, the compass systems, the autopilot and flight management systems, and the displays. Each of these entries is a topic we'll work through in detail. This is your roadmap.
