Let me point out the key terms you'll be meeting. First, you have the Climb Profile on page 319, and the Construction of the Flight Path on page 219 — these are the geometric descriptions of how the aircraft moves through the air, and they're central to obstacle clearance. Then you have C of G and C of P on page 11 — that's Centre of Gravity and Centre of Pressure, the two balance points you'll be calculating constantly.
Now, the performance side. You'll see Continuous One Engine Inoperative Power and Continuous One Engine Inoperative Thrust, both with their Ratings on pages 4 and 5. These are the maximum power or thrust the remaining engine can sustain indefinitely after a failure — that's a critical certification limit. Related to that is the Critical Engine on page 5, which is the engine whose failure has the most adverse effect on the aircraft's performance and handling.
You have Decision Speed on page 5 — that's the speed at which you must decide whether to continue the take-off or abort it. And Declared Distances on page 5 — those are the officially published runway distances for take-off, landing, and accelerate-stop.

And you'll meet Dynamic Hydroplaning on page 159 — that's when a film of water lifts the tyres off the runway surface entirely, and you lose braking and steering.
For the climb and cruise phase, you have Cruise Speeds on page 320, Cruise Altitudes on page 324, and the Cost Index on page 321 — that's the economic factor balancing fuel cost against time cost. Then Drift Down on pages 230 and 329 — that's the descent to a lower altitude when an engine fails and the aircraft can no longer maintain its cruising level. And Depressurisation on page 328, which is the loss of cabin pressure.
You'll also see Correction Factors on page 205, De-rate on page 294 — that's operating an engine at less than its maximum rated thrust — and Despatch Rules on pages 205, 239, and 349, which govern whether an aircraft may be dispatched with certain systems inoperative.
Finally, the fundamentals: Definitions on page 3, Density Altitude on pages 5 and 63 — that's pressure altitude corrected for non-standard temperature — and Drag on pages 5, 28, and 152, the aerodynamic resistance you must overcome.
So this index is your roadmap. Every one of these terms is a chapter or a major section we'll work through, and they all interconnect — the balance calculations feed the performance calculations, and the performance calculations feed the operational limits. That's the structure of the whole course.
